Asmara, the capital of Eritrea has began using solar energy to power street lights, the information minister has disclosed. According to Yemane Ghebre Meskel, under the first phase of a plan to ensure street lights rely on solar energy, 10 kilometers of road have so far been connected. The Federal Ministry of Health has confirmed the high prevalence in all states of Sudan of the Plasmodium vivax parasite which causes malaria, and estimates that that 15 per cent of the population are infected with the parasite – more than 20 per cent in Central Darfur.
